On November 10, 1983, Microsoft announced a new piece of software that would completely change the way we work. What was that software called?… Windows!
Back then, it was promoted as a “graphical user interface” (or GUI) for MS-DOS, which was the system most computers ran on at the time.
It would mean that instead of typing lines of commands, people could just use a mouse to click on icons – making computers much more user-friendly.
Bill Gates initially said that Windows 1.0 would be ready by April 1984, though it ended up taking a while longer to release. It finally became available in November 1985.
While the first couple of versions of Windows didn’t really catch on, Windows 3.0 changed everything. Suddenly, more and more businesses started using Windows, and the era of easy computing was born.
Fast forward to today, and Windows is still at the core of most businesses. It all started with an idea to make it easier for everyone to use computers – and look how far it’s come.
